A dozen SLAB counters have been installed along the 250 km (155 mi) Cathar Trail in the upper Aude Valley. The count data has been compared with data from field surveys of visitors; surveys of local accommodation providers (campgrounds, mountain huts, cottages, hotels, etc.); telephone and mail surveys; panel discussions (academics, technicians, etc.); and local tourism promoters (hiking guide sales, etc.) to assess the socio-economic impacts of trail hiking.

Two car counters and approximately ten SLAB counters were installed at strategic points (parking lots, dams, lakes and other points of interest) on Mount Saint-Victoire in southern France since 2002. The quantitative data logged at these points was combined with a large-scale qualitative study in 2009. The study revealed, among other things, that the flows of visitors had shifted and that areas that initially had not often been frequented by visitors had a much higher chance of being accessed.

A proposed project to close a mountain hut and a number of roads in order to protect the local wild reindeer population has been a subject of debate in an area of Northern Norway for several decades. To justify the project’s viability, the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA) has installed Eco-Counters to compare the spatial and temporal distribution of visitors with the GPS positions of the wild reindeer.

Eco-Counters with the ability to distinguish between different types of users had major positive impacts on Portofino National Park in Italy. It was a very effective way for park managers to resolve usage conflict between cyclists and pedestrians.

Enabling data-driven management of the world’s most beautiful areas

In rural areas, trail managers are often faced with the question: how many people use the trail each day? Each month? The remote nature of our favorite trails presents one of their greatest challenge: understand how they are used. For trail managers, count data are an essential tool to promote, maintain, and grow a trail network. Eco-Counter offers robust, reliable counters than blend into the natural environment and are built to last. From rural Colorado to the French Alps, our counters are trusted on some of the world`s most beautiful hiking and biking trails.

Count hikers and mountain bikers on your trails with our automatic counters. Count and differenciate users easily with MULTI Evo.

Eco-VisioAnalyze and share easily your count data

Counting data makes it possible to understand how natural areas are used.

Measuring footfall in nature on a permanent, automatic basis provides reliable, objective information that can be shared with key partners and the public. Profiles can be built from the data, providing information on usage, profile (busiest month, tourist peaks) and annual distribution.

Data on the number of visitors in natural or wilderness areas can also be used as reference points to :

  • measure the impact of redevelopment projects on the environment
  • balance the demands of tourism with the imperatives of protection/preservation
  • quantify long-term trends in visitor flows to natural areas.

Using an automatic counting system with remote transmission and user-friendly analysis software (Eco-Visio), collect and analyze the data you need for your projects. Easily share key figures with key partners or the public in the form of automatic reports.
