Who we are
For over 20 years, Eco-Counter has helped organizations across the U.S. and Canada count what matters—people. From trails to city streets, we turn data into insights that support active transportation and protect the natural areas of tomorrow.
We are a people-first company that believes in autonomy, trust, sustainability, and innovation—mixed with a healthy dose of passion and fun.
Today, there are over 8,000 Eco-Counters across North America, with at least one in every U.S. state and Canadian province. With 1,000+ clients and counting, our teams in Montreal and San Diego are here to help turn your data into impact!

Global by experience, local at heart
From the very beginning, our story has been shaped by international collaboration—with governments, national parks, and trusted partners across the world.
While we’ve grown globally, our approach remains deeply local: we listen, we adapt, and we understand that every project is unique. Whether it’s helping a trail network quantify visitors or supporting a city's shift toward sustainable mobility, our dedicated team brings expertise and a strong commitment to making a real impact.
No matter the size of your project, you’ll find a trusted partner in us—one who knows your challenges and stands by your side to help you meet them.
The first Eco-Counter
The very first Eco-Counter was created by a father and son using the same principles as our popular PYRO people counter. Back then, the counter was used to count hikers on a small local trail. It was small, unidirectional, and protected from the weather in a glass jar. Of course, the PYRO sensor has had quite a few upgrades since then.
The PYRO was the first in a long line of inventions to come. From bike counters to camera-based solutions, it all started with a simple idea and a a lifetime of wanting to improve counters and count data.

Data privacy
From collection, to storage, to analysis, we make sure your data is anonymous and stored securely. We follow the Privacy-by-Design principle, meaning that our systems do not collect any personal data from your citizens.
Across all our operations, we're very serious about making sure your data is safe and respects privacy laws.

Our capable, local customer support team is ready to tackle any problem. No matter where you are, trust in us to have your best interests at heart.

Sustainability
Sustainability is deeply rooted in everything we do at Eco-Counter. We work year-round on projects like making our offices more energy efficient, reducing our packaging, and streamlining our production.
Employees at Eco-Counter minimize waste and choose greener forms of travel as a reflex. We've also made great leaps in making our counters more sustainable with our Evo line.

Transparency
In all our years of collecting count data, we've always made sure it was transparent and represented ground-truth. This meant creating solutions for data validation and reconstruction to maximize clarity and interpretability.
What's more, we give you full ownership of your data, so you can access it, verify it, and use it freely, wherever and whenever you want.
