As for motor vehicle traffic, the city observed a 50% decrease in motorized traffic and an average reduction of 8 km/h in vehicle speed .
The study also documented the economic impact of the redevelopment, which is often feared by business owners. The evidence: 37 new businesses opened in 2021, a 65% increase in foot traffic between the summer of 2020 and the summer of 2021, and a retail occupancy rate that rose from 75% in 2019 to 85% in 2023, according to the SDC Rue Saint-Denis. This data, drawn from a report by the District’s Department of Transportation, showed a 91% decrease in bicycle accidents resulting in injuries, a measurable improvement in travel times for all users, and high bicycle usage of the facility. Five years of continuous data collection thus made the difference between keeping the infrastructure in place and removing it: in the face of measured and documented figures, political decision-making no longer has the same room to maneuver.
